Time Out Market or Campo de Ourique? Two Lisbon food stops compared

A transport-hub food hall or a market-shopping stop? Compare two Lisbon venues by food options, location and published hours—not untested claims about taste or price.

MenuRoom Editorial · 2026-10-10 · 4 min read

Two Lisbon markets can solve two different food-day problems. Time Out Market puts a published line-up of restaurants and chef counters beside the Cais do Sodré transport hub. Mercado de Campo de Ourique combines a traditional shopping market with restaurants and bars in its central hall. The useful choice is not “which is best?” but “what else do I want to do around lunch?”

This is a practical comparison of two deliberately selected Lisbon venues, checked on 10 October 2026 against the market operator and the city council. It is not a city-wide ranking, a price survey or an account of a visit. Neither venue is presented as newly opened.

The short comparison

Your plan Time Out Market Mercado de Campo de Ourique
Where to go Mercado da Ribeira, Avenida 24 de Julho, 1200-479 Lisboa Rua Coelho da Rocha, Lisboa
What the sources establish A food-hall restaurant line-up, including chef counters and several cuisines Traditional food shopping plus restaurants and bars in the central hall
Practical reason to choose it Combine a meal with a journey through Cais do Sodré Combine a meal with a market-shopping list
Published site hours Daily, 10:00–00:00 Sunday–Wednesday, 07:00–23:00; Thursday–Saturday, 07:00–01:00

These are the hours published for the venues, not a promise that every kitchen or fresh-food stall serves throughout them. All times are local. Confirm an individual counter's service hours before planning an early breakfast or a late dinner.

Time Out Market: start with the counter, not a star rating

The operator's food guide lists, among others, Duro de Matar for a Mexican offering, Libertà Pasta Bar for fresh pasta and Miguel Castro e Silva for dishes including bacalhau à Brás. Those are three starting points for different appetites, not three meals we have tasted or ranked. Check the counter's current menu for availability and prices.

Time Out both operates the market and publishes the guide used here. Its superlatives should therefore be read as the operator's own presentation, not as MenuRoom's independent assessment. We have used the directory to identify food options, not to repeat claims about the city's best burger or steak.

The clearest practical advantage in the checked information is the location. The operator places the market around two minutes on foot from Cais do Sodré station, on the green Metro line, and identifies the same station as the terminus for trains from Cascais. If your day already passes through that interchange, this is a straightforward stop to consider. The walking estimate is the operator's, not a route we have timed.

Campo de Ourique: a meal and a shopping list

Lisbon City Council describes a traditional market with fresh fish, vegetables, fruit, meat, bread, charcuterie and other food shops, alongside restaurants and bars in the central hall. That gives this stop a different planning focus: lunch can be one part of a visit that also includes buying ingredients.

Do not confuse the late closing time with fresh-food shopping hours. The council gives a building-level schedule but does not establish that the fish, fruit or meat stalls keep those same hours. If shopping is the reason for the trip, check the relevant trader rather than relying on the 23:00 or 01:00 finish.

Nor does a neighbourhood address establish lower prices, shorter queues or a quieter room. We have not measured those things, and the sources do not justify declaring Campo de Ourique the cheaper or more “authentic” winner.

How to choose for your day

Choose Time Out Market as a starting point if the Cais do Sodré connection and a named counter in its current directory fit your plans. Consider Campo de Ourique if combining market shopping with a meal is the main attraction. Those are recommendations about itinerary and format, not cooking quality.

For a budget decision, compare an actual dish at each venue: the portion, any side dish, drinks and whether the price is for eating there or taking away. A venue's reputation cannot tell you the total bill. This article contains no sampled menu prices and makes no cheapest claim.

Method and dates: this is a desk-researched, unranked comparison of two Lisbon venues, selected for their contrasting trip-planning uses. Payment status played no part in selection. No tasting, visit or crowd survey was conducted. Time Out's directions page displays 3 December 2024 (metadata updated 17 October 2025); its food guide displays 1 October 2024 (metadata updated 11 August 2026). The municipal entry shows no publication or update date. All three were checked on 10 October 2026; recheck hours and individual menus before travelling.
